Police strike deal to open new response unit at high-profile business park16 Jul 2015
Avon and Somerset Constabulary have struck a deal to open a new response unit at a high-profile business park.
The police will be opening its new base at Weston Gateway Business Park (WGBP) in Weston-super-Mare, as part of a plan to improve and modernise its operations.
It is estimated that around 140 jobs will be housed at the site.
Weston Gateway Business Park (WGBP) is a multi-purpose business hub that is located in the Junction 21 enterprise area of the town; and is one of the most high-profile developments in the South West.
Knightstone Housing and Greene King are already based at the site, which will also contain Enterprise House – a 26,000 sq ft commercial office build that offers suites from 2,500 sq ft in size for businesses.
Enterprise House is set to be completed by the summer of 2016 and is very likely to be at capacity before a spade hits the ground.
Gemma Day, 30, is Director of Weston Gateway Business Park.
She comments on the deal: “The police were looking at other sites to set up the new response unit but they were ruled due to the transport links and connectivity not meeting their requirements, so we are delighted they have chosen Weston Gateway Business Park.
“Subject to the final planning permission being agreed, we look forward to supporting the police in the move and expect the new unit to be open by 2016.
“It is also fantastic to see new jobs being brought in to the town.”
The police recently closed its main headquarters on Walliscote Road in Weston-super-Mare, with the main bulk of its services being transferred to the nearby Town Hall.
Its custody suite was replaced by a purpose build facility in Bridgwater.
According to planning documents the new police response center is required in order to provide a modern, fit for purpose, and responsive police service for Weston and the surrounding area.
The new HQ will be 23 metres by 15 metres.
